The process employed a matrix of collagen seeded with muscle cells bathed in a nutritious solution and induced to divide. In 2001, dermatologist Wiete Westerhof along with van Eelen and businessperson Willem van Kooten announced that they had filed for a worldwide patent on a process to produce cultured meat. Vein secured patent US 6835390 for the production of tissue-engineered meat for human consumption, wherein muscle and fat would be grown in an integrated fashion to create food products. In vitro cultivation of muscle fibers was first performed successfully in 1971 when pathologist Russel Ross cultured guinea-pig aorta. The earlier discovery of cell lines provided the basis for the idea. He attended a university lecture discussing the prospects of preserved meat. As a prisoner of war during the Second World War, Van Eelen suffered from starvation, leaving him passionate about food production and food security. In the 1950s, Dutch researcher Willem van Eelen independently came up with the idea for cultured meat. In a 1931 essay published by various periodicals and later included in his work Thoughts and Adventures, British statesman Winston Churchill wrote: "We shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium." The theoretical possibility of growing meat in an industrial setting has long been of interest. A September 2021 poll indicated that the majority of industry CEOs have a preference for cultivated meat, with 75 percent of 44 companies preferring it. In September 2019, GFI announced new research which found that the term cultivated meat is sufficiently descriptive and differentiating, possesses a high degree of neutrality, and ranks highly for consumer appeal. Some industry stakeholders felt that the term unnecessarily tarnished conventional meat producers, continuing to prefer cell-based meat as a neutral alternative. By 2018 it had surpassed cultured and " in vitro" in media mentions and Google searches. The Good Food Institute (GFI) coined the term in 2016, and in late 2018, the institute published research claiming that use of clean better reflected the production process and benefits. Artificial meat is occasionally used, although that specific term has multiple definitions.īetween 20, clean meat gained traction. Nomenclature īesides cultured meat, the terms healthy meat, slaughter-free meat, in vitro meat, vat-grown meat, lab-grown meat, cell-based meat, clean meat, cultivated meat and synthetic meat have been used to describe the product. The first restaurant to serve cultured meat opened in Singapore in 2021. Cultured meat is mass-produced in Israel. Data published by the non-governmental organization Good Food Institute found that in 2021 cultivated meat companies attracted $140 million in Europe. The applications for cultured meat led to ethical, health, environmental, cultural, and economic discussions. The production process is constantly evolving, driven by companies and research institutions. Avant Meats brought cultured grouper to market in 2021, while other companies have pursued different species of fish and other seafood. While most efforts focus on common meats such as pork, beef, and chicken which constitute the bulk of consumption in developed countries, companies such as Orbillion Bio focused on high-end or unusual meats including elk, lamb, bison, and Wagyu beef. Since then, other cultured meat prototypes have gained media attention: SuperMeat opened a farm-to-fork restaurant called "The Chicken" in Tel Aviv to test consumer reaction to its "Chicken" burger, while the "world's first commercial sale of cell-cultured meat" occurred in December 2020 at Singapore restaurant 1880, where cultured meat manufactured by US firm Eat Just was sold. In 2013, Mark Post created a hamburger patty made from tissue grown outside of an animal. A video by New Harvest / Xprize explaining the development of cultured meat and a "post-animal bio-economy, driven by lab grown protein (meat, eggs, milk)" (runtime 3:09) In a statement at the re-brand event, David Fordon, CEO and General Manager of the Solanna Group, the owners of the parcel said, “We’re quite impressed by Phoenix Rising FC’s grasp of the goal we are trying to achieve at Akimel 7 for a quality sports and entertainment environment. The land at the site is generationally owned, and the families involved are in agreement to develop the footprint. Most importantly for this race – and with two announcements promised by MLS before New Year’s Day, this is definitely a race – the stadium complex has plenty of space for a 25,000-seat stadium with amenities, and the red tape has already been cut.īack in November, 2016, when the ownership group announced that Arizona United SC would become Phoenix Rising FC, they had already established the land lease at SRPMIC that would make possible the existing USL complex, as well as a future MLS stadium, retail ventures, and whatever else would become mutually beneficial. The club already operates a shuttle to the match from the official pre-match party at nearby Tempe Marketplace. Remote though the site currently is in terms of nightlife, a great many Valley residents already depend on access to a vehicle, and a spur from the popular Metro Light Rail has been discussed. The location is not in downtown Phoenix proper, as might have been mandatory in MLS bids of the past, but ask any Phoenician, and for the moment at least, they’d much prefer south Scottsdale for a night out. The main campus of Arizona State University, one of the largest schools in the nation, is two miles away. Situated at the intersection of major Valley arterials Loop 101 and Loop 202, the complex is an easy drive from both high-dollar suburbs and high-density millennial hotspots like Tempe and Old Town Scottsdale. Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex, home of the current United Soccer League club, and proposed home of the future MLS franchise, sits at the corner of approximately 550 acres of land at the southwest extent of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) – also known as the center of the Phoenix area’s soccer demographic. Phoenix Rising FC, once considered a dark horse in this race, is one of the only candidates facing none of the obstacles to stadium development that hampers other markets, and its ownership group has quickly and methodically achieved every objective necessary for the MLS stamp of approval. In nearly every other candidate city, similar situations are putting ambitious MLS bids in a holding pattern of maddening uncertainty, and the media circus that has erupted around them is a boon to both the league, and the bidders who are poised to rise above the rest. In San Diego, the public property targeted for stadium development cannot change hands without a vote, which is now slated to happen in November of 2018, well after MLS has concluded the expansion process. A public vote on financing a budgetary shortfall in Saint Louis stalled the MLS bid in that city. Today’s expansion applications come from cities much less densely developed than Miami or New York City, but real struggles are reducing the number of viable candidates with startling speed.Īs is the case with launching any high-profile business on a large piece of prime real estate, the primary hurdles to these efforts are political, financial, or both. Likewise in 2013, the league was understandably keen to add City Football Group to its business, but four years later, New York City FC is perhaps farther from a stadium deal than Beckham is. When David Beckham was granted the option to purchase a franchise for a mere $25 million back in 2007, MLS was in a very different place, but still, they could not have foreseen, much less desired the embarrassing situation playing out in Miami. There was a time, not that long ago, when MLS would allow a desirable ownership group access to the league’s membership with little more than a flicker of hope that an appropriate stadium would appear. Since the league’s January 31st application deadline, the fate of each of the 12 applicant cities have risen and fallen primarily on the bidding owners’ ability to deliver the number-one item on the MLS wish list: a soccer-specific stadium. Much has been made of the contentious race to secure one of the next four expansion slots into Major League Soccer. Those kinds of studies are vital as China identifies habitat areas for protection and future reintroduction programs. After a long period of observation, scientists discovered that although the temperature is low, pandas still can move freely and sleep on snow-covered bamboo. In fact, pandas do not need to hibernate, they are very active during cold weather. Looked at variables in wild giant panda habitats in China and found that temperature seemed to be one of the most important variables with pandas preferring to live in habitats that were about 64-69☏. (Ursus americanus), seasonal patterns of corticoid secretion are putatively linked to metabolic demands of hibernation. As we know, most animals hibernate during the winter However, pandas are different from those animals.

For example, at the water cooler:Ĭolleague: Great, thanks. Other times you want to interact with people on a surface level. Sometimes you want to express yourself or get your needs met. One of several modes that you switch between during the day. Think of listening as a mode of communication. If you only ever listened, you’d never eat! When I run communication training people sometimes think I’m telling them to use active listening all the time. You’ll be able to include it in normal conversations. Once you learn and practise the procedure, you can adapt it. Other times, you can use the technique without it being obvious. You can use the technique without it being obvious. In these situations, other people might notice you saying, “it sounds like,” and realise that you’re using active listening. Or when you’re talking to your friend who’s having a difficult time. For example, in a one-to-one meeting at work. Sometimes you’ll make it clear that you’re using a communication technique. Or in a crisis, when you need information as quickly as possible. Or if you need to get clarity when you’re working with a large group. You can also use it places you might not expect. Or when you want to help someone without giving them advice. You can use it whenever you need to understand someone better. That’s because it’s a versatile technique. I call active listening the Swiss Army Knife of communication. American psychologists Carl Rogers and Richard Farson coined the term ”active listening” in an article published in 1957.Īlthough the technique came from psychotherapy, it’s now used in business, education and beyond. Listening brings about changes in peoples' attitudes toward themselves and others… People who have been listened to in this new and special way become more emotionally mature, more open to their experiences, less defensive, more democratic, and less authoritarian. From their article: Despite the popular notion that listening is a passive approach, clinical and research evidence… shows that sensitive listening is a most effective agent for individual personality change and group development. Origin of the techniqueĪmerican psychologists Carl Rogers and Richard Farson coined the term “active listening” in 1957. If you want to improve your soft skills, it’s a great place to start. It’s the most versatile communication skill that I know. Have you ever noticed someone say, “it sounds like,” or “I’m hearing that,” when they talk to you? If so, they were probably using this technique. Your goal: imagine what it’s like to be them. You might even find that the other person learns something about themselves! When people listen to us, it changes how we see our own situation. As long as you commit to giving it a go, I guarantee that you’ll learn something. To connect with the feelings and needs which influence their words. Your goal is to imagine what it’s like to be them. This process isn’t about getting information. The cycle continues for as long as it needs to. Then you reflect back what you heard in your own words. Instead, you focus on what’s happening to them. While you listen, you ignore your own thoughts and ideas. Let’s get started! What is active listening?Īctive listening is a way to understand someone’s point of view. You’ll also get a free worksheet to print out. You’ll learn the pitfalls to avoid and top tips to remember. And instructions for how to practise with a friend. I’ll share a formula you can use to get started today. I’m also going to show you how it works with real examples. In this post I’m going to tell you what active listening is. You can use it whenever you need to build understanding. I call it the Swiss Army Knife of communication. Of all the techniques I’ve learned (and taught), one stands out: active listening. I’ve spent the last decade learning about communication skills. For those of us without magical powers, what’s our best option? How can we understand people’s point of view? Most of us need to communicate with many people every day. But when we assume, we often get it wrong. We might think that we know what matters to people. It’s rooted in their background and life experiences. No two people see the world in the same way. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could read people’s minds? |
